This Sunday: A Meal Like None Other
Thanks for checking out the blog this week! Last week during our corporate worship meeting Pastor Sean preached through 1 Corinthians 11: 1-16. He pointed out that God calls men and women, especially husbands and wives, to bring glory to God through their created roles, not just in private, but when they are gathered together to worship. This week we will continue on to 1 Corinthians 11:17-34. Here is a summary from Pastor Sean about where we are heading this week.
We should listen to Benjamin Franklin when he says, “We should eat to live not live to eat.” So acknowledging that food is not meant to be ultimate, we still must see that a meal communicates so much. It tells us we can’t sustain ourselves; that something outside of us must keep us alive. However, not all meals are equal. There is a meal that communicates more than any other meal- the Lord’s Supper. Paul is passionate that the people of God know the beauties of the meal and don’t turn it into another time to feed their lusts and distract one another from God’s designs. After commending the Corinthian church for their embracing of the gospel, he criticizes how they are acting when they come together. In 1 Corinthians 11:17-34, his first rebuke is that there are divisions among them and yet God’s people are meant to be a people of peace. His second rebuke regarding their corporate gatherings is when they take the Lord’s Supper they take it in a way that devastates its message, dishonors Christ, and leads to discipline for God’s people. Paul’s instructions to the church at Corinth not only teaches us the meaning of the Lord’s Supper but also helps us know how to participate in it in order to experience Christ, and communicate unity, purity, and the tragic beauty of the cross of Jesus.
We will take the Lord’s Supper this week, so be sure to prepare your heart to take this meal together with the body. Also, here are the songs that we will sing this week. Take some time to listen or download these songs so that we can be ready to sing them together on Sunday.
